Tumbling Effects of Steroids in the Mlb - 2799 Words
Brad Stone Poltical Science 11/25/2010 Clifton Wilkinson Tumbling Effects of Steroid Use by Major League Baseball Players Are the Major League Baseball record books tainted? Can a single drug change the way a baseball fan looks at the record set by Barry Bonds or opinions about a man who hit 762 homeruns (Pitch 1)? Steroids have the ability to turn an average player into a player that can qualify and succeed as a Major League Baseball player. They also provide the ââ¬Å"goodâ⬠player the ability to become a ââ¬Å"greatâ⬠player; a ââ¬Å"greatâ⬠player to become a ââ¬Å"superstarâ⬠. There is even talk among the baseball analysts that his records set should be removed from the record books because steroid u se can be viewed as a form of cheating used to accomplish such feats. Moving on to the team aspect of baseball, one can imply the old saying, ââ¬Å"guilty by association.â⬠The media and the general public, typically view the teammates of the steroid user as someone who also uses steroids, until proven otherwise. A professional baseball team gets recognized for winning and reaching out to the community, but steroids can bring an umbrella of suspension to the entire team. This point is proven in Jose Consecoââ¬â¢s autobiography when he admitted he ââ¬Å"implicated that ten of his former teammates including his brother as steroid usersâ⬠(Roberts 1). Not only does the playerââ¬â¢s steroid use affect his immediate team players, but it also casts additional suspension to the entire Major League Baseball as a whole. When a player is exceeding his normal performance level, the general public immediately suspects steroid use based on previous players who have been linked or proven to be steroid users. Major League Baseball players understan d the penalty, if linked to steroids, can have on the player or the team in general. College essay - my world free essay sample
One last self-check. As I look down, my happiness is momentarily frozen. I sink my finger into the fat that has fought its way out of the bottom half of my swimsuit. Appalling. Disgusting. In a world laminated with materialism the ripple of fat becomes a tangible reality. Imperfection. A concept very difficult to deal with as a model. The loss of perfection means the loss of money. The pains of these realities create a conscious mindset of fear, the strive to an unattainable perfection, as the external imperfections are thoroughly glossed over with lip-gloss. Everyone around you seems to possesse everything you need, donââ¬â¢t have, and can never have. The harsh reality. I made my way out of the canopy, breathing deeply to prepare myself for their scrutinizing eyes. I am bombarded, primed and prepped and then alone. I am in the spotlight. The parasite of pessimism gnaws deeper into my flesh. We will write a custom essay sample on College essay my world or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Will I ever be good enough for them? A stylist yells that I must look more natural. Once again I am not quite right yet. I am the model. I am the perceived dream. I am the face of the inward insecurities of the world that compel them to buy what Iââ¬â¢m selling. I am ready for my close up. My mind is racked by the worry that I cannot live up to their standards. I am seven years old. My seven-year-old mind had lost itself among all the makeup, hair and clothing that was trying to cover me up. So many people needed to shine through me, so many peoples careers were weighted on my young, weak, back.. From the external perspective it would seem that everyone was asking far too much from me. However, the external was really all they cared about. They wanted nothing from me, they needed nothing. I was their drawing board and money was the only thing they were able to elicit from my big blue eyes. I became part of a world where the god of money presided as Zeus and all the other gods fought for his attention so they wouldnââ¬â¢t be sent down to the world of the mortals. Your friend could never really be your friend for she was always your competition. With so many other peoples dreams struggling to break through my appearance it was hard for a seven year old not to have a skewed view of what she really thinks. Instead, my dream became the effort to satisfy theirs, th e perfect look, the good picture, the smile, were what I thrived on. The model. The perfect face. The perfect picture. However, it was never good enough, for the girl standing right next to you always has something you donââ¬â¢t. And when your seven, that something that she has is always exactly what you want, be it a shiny red balloon or a perfectly flat stomach. My pessimism became a thriving parasite. Yet my worries went no farther than my own mind. For, everyone else saw no imperfections in the handful of little girls who ran around with their exaggerated smiles and brightly colored swimsuits. In an attempt to explain the brooding affects of childhood, I must put in a word about my father. The deterioration of man is a aged process like the fermenting of a stain in an old shirt. While at the beginning it can be passed of as unimportant yet soon it becomes so thoroughly cemented into ones being that it is too late. My father is a man of promises. Big words with hollow effects. Criticism. Stubbornness. Mockery. Yet, as a child he would make my eyes light up when he came into the room. He was not my father, he was daddy. I first entered the business in this mindset, untainted want of my fathers affection was one of the principle purposes of my existence. If he was proud then there was nothing more I needed. So I worked at this job because it was what my mother took me to, because I thought it was what all the kids were doing, and I thought if I did it well they would be pleased. At the time it just was. Now I realize that had I not been thrown into the world of people pleasin g at so young an age I probably wouldnââ¬â¢t have such level of self-conscience. This job gave me a medium though which I felt an undying pressure to please, not only please the people who would pay me which was a concept I had to be very well aware of to function in that job , but also to please my family. This created a selfless world inside me from a young age. A world where my own thoughts were drowned amongst those who may actually care about a ripple of fat peeking out above the bottoms of a seven year olds swimsuit.

Fuck Tha Police an Analysis of the Role free essay sample
Gangs Rap submerge of HIP-HOP, that the question: What were the underlying cultural reasons for the Los Angles Riots of 1992? can be answered. This paper will examine rap lyrics from prominent Los Angles Hip-Hop acts In order to investigate the deteriorating rapport between the citys oft;biased police department and the citys increasingly restless black urban youth, from the perspective of the latter group. These lyrics will be juxtaposed with statements various accounts of events involving racially motivated police actions, in order to assess their validity. In ongoing so, it is shown that hip-hop reveals the problematic culture of aggression that led to the riots the militant mindset of both the LAPPED and the young inner-city African American community, and the increasingly antagonistic and violent relationship between the two. Word Count (132) Summary of Evidence In the late asses, the hip-hop submerge known as Gangs Rap, which focused on the oft-violent lifestyles found In the poverty-ridden Inner scales, emerged as a phenomenon. We will write a custom essay sample on Fuck Tha Police: an Analysis of the Role or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page .The participants In the Gangs Rap scene were not third person observers of the situations they depicted; the majority of these rappers were minorities and came from low-income backgrounds. If a rapper was not from the hood he commanded no respect, and if he rapped about things he had never been through, he instantaneously lost all credibility. Songs were written in the first person, and subject matter came from personal experience. In the words of Ice-T, who is widely recognized as one of the forefathers of the genre , the goal of Gangs Rap was to provide street-level Journalism, real-life observations told in poetry . And at its best, it was successful in doing so. Its ability to Inform the marginalia lack youth about the problems plaguing their community led politically driven rapper Chuck Doff Public Enemy to credit rap as the Black folks CNN . And Its ability to supply a forum to express grievances and call for change led It to also be praised as a voice for those Impoverished and overlooked by governments, police, and politicians that had the power to change urban communities, but that failed to represent their needs .The LAPPED was a frequent target Hip-Hop artists, who characterized the department as racist and excessive. These accusations are understandable. Ender Commissioner Gates, the LAPPED Went after crime before it occurred, Gates said. Our people went out every single night trying to stop crime before it happened, trying to take people off the street that they believed were involved in crime. And that made us a very aggressive, proactive police department. This mentality opened up the door for frequent employment of racial profiling. In 1 987, C. R.A. S. H (Community Resources Against Street Hoodlums), a special operations unit of the LAPPED, launched the Operation Hammer Annihilative. The operation consisted f a series of arrests and drug raids that were made In an attempt to crack down on the gang violence that plagued the city. However, due to the stereotyping utilized by From 1984 to 1989 the number of citizen complaints about police brutality increased 33% , and the LAPPED developed a reputation for accepting and even encouraging the use of excessive force, especially with minority suspects. This excessive use of force on minorities was demonstrated on March 3rd, 1991, when Rodney King, an African- American construction worker, was brutally assaulted by a group police officers using lily clubs. The beating became front-page national news, due to on-looker George Holiday, who recorded the incident on camera, and sent the videotape, which showed King getting stuck by a baton 56 times too local news station. Four of the officers involved in the beating were charged with excessive violence, but were acquitted of all charges by a Jury of ten Whites and one Asian, e nraging the minority community. The perceivably unjust acquittal caused the long-building social tension caused by the crack epidemic, economic hardship, racial inequality, antagonism teen races, racial profiling, and police brutality, to completely erupt. Angry citizens took to the streets, and from April 29,1992 to May 4, 1992, the city of Los Angles fell victim to the most violent riots of the 20th century in the United States. During these tumultuous six days, $735,000,000 worth of property was damaged , 53 people died , and 248 people were critically uninjured.Word Count (591) Evaluation of Sources Source: Video of Rodney King Beating, Taken by George Holiday This source is a video of Rodney King getting brutally abused by members of the LAPPED. It was taken using a personal video camera by on-looker George Holiday, who sent the tape to local news stations. The purpose of the video was to capture the extreme violence that the LAPPED used to subdue King, and to show this evidence to the public. The value of the video is that it played a major role in the start of the riots. The video circulated extremely rapidly, stirring up racial tensions, and increasing animosity towards the LAPPED. The source is also valuable because it provides a direct look into the beating that led to the riots, allowing the viewer to aka his or her own Judgments of the events without the influence of any outside opinion. The video is limited because of its low resolution, which makes some of the action difficult to decipher, and also by its lack of interpretation or analysis of the beating. Source: Gangs Rap group N. W.Ass 1988 protest song Buck That Police This source is a recording of the song Buck That Police by Gangs Rap group N. W. A. (which stands for Inning with Attitudes) off of their debut album, Straight Auto Compton. Its purpose was to express the frustration that the members of the rope held against the LAPPED, and to help the sale of Straight Auto Compton. This is a valuable source because it demonstrates the intensity of the hatred that the black community had towards the LAPPED that caused the riots. The song became a soundtrack to the riots, and was used by rioters to explain their actions. The source is limited due to its bias. The song does not show the viewpoints of most of those in Los Angles, it merely shows those of the rappers in the song. Word Count (294) Analysis The Juxtaposition of the video of the beating of Rodney King and the song by N. W. A provides a good of example of hip-hops role in the riots. Hip-Hop served as the black community response to the prejudiced actions of the police. While these songs Holidays show that the descriptions told by artists many Gangs Rappers were justified. For example, rappers often complained about being pulled over while driving without cause. In Cop Killer, Ice-T complains A pig stopped me for nothing12. The Christopher Commission, a 1991 post-Rodney King beating independent investigation that looked into the practices of LAPPED, led by future secretary of state Warren Christopher, validates their sentiment: Routine stops of young African-American and Latino males, seemingly without probable cause or reasonable suspicion, may be part and parcel of the Laps aggressive style of policing17 the commission declares. In Buck that Police Ice Cube further analyzes the prejudices of the LAPPED, claiming that police stop him when he is driving expensive cars because they would rather him conform to their image of an African- American, than accept the fact that he has achieved economic success mound rather e me in the pen/then me and Lorenz rolling the Benz14. In the Fuhrman Tapes, LAPPED Detective Mark Fuhrman specifically mentions that he arrested a black person in Westwood because He was a Niger. He didnt belong18, and muses, Niger driving a Propose You always stop him18, By arresting a black person in Westwood without cause, and suggesting all black people driving expensive cars should be pulled over, Fuhrman conforms to Ice Cubes description, further displaying rap as a genre it which its artists describe real world experiences in order to make a political argument. Hip-Hop also demonstrates the animosity that existed between the LAPPED and the minority communities of the city. For example, many rappers hurled extremely derogatory slurs in the direction of law enforcement officials. In Cop Killer by Ice T and in many songs by Los Angles based Latino Hip-Hop group Cypress Hill, police officers are referred to as pigs on numerous occasions . In their song Buck That Police, N. W. A. Refers to one as a Punk ass motherhoods With a fake ass badge and a gun and on the same track, member MS Rene mocks the police officers by calling their Billy clubs silly clubs11.And in the Cypress Hill song Looking Through the Eyes of a Pig, a-Real demeans the character of the police department of Los Angles, describing them as the biggest gang youve ever seen, above the law . While these insults may seem to be a bit over the top, the passion and anger behind them can be understood when one looks at the culture of racial bias that existed within the LAPPED during this era..The Christopher Commission found evidence of officers referring to Blacks as gorillas and proclaiming Monkey-slapping time! 9 before entering black neighborhoods. In his series of interviews with Laura McKinney, LAPPED detective Mark Fuhrman refers to African-Americans as naggers 49 times . Yet despite Fuhrman clear prejudicial attitudes (attitudes that resulted in a self-estimated 3000 or 4000 pages of internal affairs investigations concerning him), he received 55 commendations throughout his police career . Darryl Gates, the police chief of the LAPPED during this era, was quoted as calling Mexican police officers lazy and making a distinction between blacks and normal people . That the head of the entire police department would behave in such a manner, and that a Alice officer with a reputation for overt displays of bigotry would be commended so frequently, reveals the fundamental problem within the LAPPED during this time the tolerance or even celebration of comporting oneself in a prejudiced fashion.Word Conclusion The Los Angles Riots of 1992, so often attributed to the verdict of the Rodney King trial (to the point where they are sometimes referred to as the Rodney King riots), were not the product of one singular incident. The source of the riots lies in the problematic culture of Los Angles during the late asses and early asses-?the poor Tate of the urban community, the violent and antagonistic relationship between the police and the minorities of the city, and the tensions that e xisted between races within the city. This culture is best understood through the context of hip-hop, the biased actions of the police and the increasingly frustrated and aggressive mentality of the poor and oppressed community of minorities. The Rodney King verdict served merely as a trigger to an inevitable event caused by a long developing rage caused by the systematic oppression of a group of people. Word Count (150)

5 things you should never say when asking for a raise
5 things you should never say when asking for a raise In the world of work, there are few situations more anxiety-provoking than asking for a raise. Summoning the courage to confront your boss and ask for more money can prove daunting for even the most confident of employees- itââ¬â¢s just something weââ¬â¢d prefer to have happen to us rather than having to proactively go after it. In reality, there are times when youââ¬â¢ll need to take the first step towards securing a raise if you want to make it happen, which means youââ¬â¢ll have to initiate the discussion- and there are certainly some approaches you should avoid if you want it to work out in your favor. When the time comes for you to ask for a raise, be sure to avoid the following five conversation pitfalls!1. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s not fairâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ This conversation red flag implies that you think youââ¬â¢re being unfairly treated and it could be interpreted that you think your boss isnââ¬â¢t doing a great job ofâ⬠¦wellâ⬠¦being your boss. Your goal duri ng a productive raise conversation should be to demonstrate your value to the company, not to vent about how badly you think youââ¬â¢re being treated- whether itââ¬â¢s true or not.2. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ve worked here for X yearsâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ This is a common raise conversation mistake and typically never leads to a convincing argument that a raise is well deserved. Although a work anniversary is a common time to have a performance review where raises often get discussed, in reality your years of service donââ¬â¢t automatically translate into perceived value for your employer.Your specific contributions to the company you work for, and how they contribute to the bottom line, is the key here, and should be the focus of your raise conversation- not the fact that youââ¬â¢ve simply been showing up for a certain number of years (no matter how long it has been). While company loyalty is commendable, unless itââ¬â¢s specified in the terms of your hiring agreement it doesnââ¬â ¢t mean a raise is in order.3. ââ¬Å"I know someone here who makes way more than meâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ This is never a good topic to bring to your bossââ¬â¢s attention, inside or outside of a raise conversation. Discussing salaries with coworkers is typically frowned up by employees and could lead to unintended punitive actions. Furthermore, it does little to demonstrate your personal value as an employee- in fact, it could make you seem petty or bitter, which will not likely help your case.4. ââ¬Å"If I donââ¬â¢t get the raise I want Iââ¬â¢m leavingâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Adopting an adversarial tone rarely works out well in any negotiation, let alone while making a case for why you deserve a raise. Simply put, itââ¬â¢s human nature to feel threatened when given an ultimatum such as this. Do you want to move forward in your relationship with your boss on this footing? At best, youââ¬â¢ll get your raise with a side order of negative feelings and resentment for your tactless approac h, and at worst they might just take the other option and show you the doorâ⬠¦5. ââ¬Å"You need me more than I need youâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ See pitfall #4. Once again, this contentious approach is the opposite of how you should proceed in a raise conversation and will likely have the opposite effect of what youââ¬â¢re aiming for. A surefire way to get on your bossââ¬â¢s bad side is to tell them that they need you more than you need them, and they may even take the opportunity to prove you wrong by letting you go- not exactly the result youââ¬â¢re aiming for, is it?Your raise conversation is a classic ââ¬Å"show, not tellâ⬠moment- showcase your value to the company with real measurable data and quantifiable evidence and youââ¬â¢ll have a much better shot at getting that raise than merely telling your boss that youââ¬â¢re great and theyââ¬â¢re not.Hereââ¬â¢s the bottom line- if youââ¬â¢re planning on initiating a raise conversation with your boss, plan for it as you would any other persuasive presentation. Come equipped with a list of convincing, undeniable evidence that demonstrates why youââ¬â¢re worth a salary increase- not why you feel entitled to one and upset why it hasnââ¬â¢t happened yet. Many bosses are ââ¬Å"bottom lineâ⬠thinkers, and if you can make a case that highlights your value to their bottom line, then youââ¬â¢ve put yourself in the best possible position to get the raise youââ¬â¢re aiming for. And if you hear yourself saying any of the five conversation pitfalls mentioned here, act fast and pivot the conversation quickly!

Discourse On Method and Meditations On First Philosophy Essay
Discourse On Method and Meditations On First Philosophy - Essay Example At examining the difference between pure intellectual and imagination, he uses figures such as triangles, bound by three lines, chiliagon bound by thousands of sides and Pentagon. He points that the force of habit drives one to imagine something whenever one thinks of a corporeal thing. The new effort on the side of the mind that makes one imagine rather than need it to understand defines the difference between pure intellectual and imagination (Descartes, Weissman & Bluhm, 1996). The power of imagination differing from the power of understanding is not essential to an own essence. The power of imagination relies on something distinct from the person in question. Despite the existence of the body, it is by means of the characterââ¬â¢s body that brings an imagination of corporeal things. The mind, therefore, looks at the ideas that exist in it when it understands. While when it imagines, it reflects on the body and intuits something that conform to idea perceived by the sense or understood by the same mind. Therefore, an imagination is actualized in this manner if the body exists. Therefore, from a probability, the body exists (Descartes, Weissman & Bluhm, 1996). From the corporeal nature the object of pure mathematics, perception of things increases with means of senses. With the help of the memory, they appear to have reached the imagination. First, we sense that we have a head, feet, and other parts of the body. Pleasure and pain hunger enables sensing of appetites (Descartes, Weissman & Bluhm, 1996). One can also sense things found in the environment and use that basis to distinguish the earth, sky, and seas among others. The ideas from the mind are much vivid, explicit, and distinctive than those knowingly and deliberately formed through mediation or found within the memory. They all seem first not to come from own self. Therefore, the alternative was that they came from other things

The Criminal Justice System Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words
The Criminal Justice System - Research Paper Example An in-depth analysis of the criminal cases reported in Britain in the past elaborates that black males have been, more of than not, involved in a vast majority of the offenses committed by the black community. Representation of black women in the crime is far less than that of black men. In addition to that, male juvenile crimes make a large portion of the total crimes committed by the black community in Britain. Particularly, black males aged 13 to 19 are fundamentally responsible for the number of crimes committed by the British black community. In a recent survey conducted by (HCHAC, 2007), the percentage of boys from all ethnic origins who confessed having indulged in crime was 13% against a mere 7% of the girls that made the confession of the crime and this fact is also evident from the fact that male prisoners were found to be 70986 more in number than the female prisoners till February of 2007. This proves that black girls are definitely quite less in number than black boys wh o are suspected of the crime yet their representation in the British criminal justice system is far more than that of non-black girls. Although there is a lot of controversy about the black male teenagersââ¬â¢ involvement in crime in general, yet there is no denying the fact that they do make a considerable portion of the criminals in Britain. ââ¬Å"At the peak teenage, 19, blacks suffer firearms murder rates 17 to 20 times higher than do whites.â⬠(Males, 2008). In order to minimize the widespread susceptibility of black male teenagers towards crime, and minimize the number of real young black male teenagers remaining within the existing form of British criminal justice system, it is imperative that the factors that increase their susceptibility towards crime are identified and evaluated against other ethnicities. The chief causes that defame black male teenagers as a non-considerate and socially irresponsible community include, but are not limited to social exclusion, poverty, and low social status, lack of discipline, lack of sufficient education, social disaffection.
